Uranium mining industry comprises companies that operate by mining, exploring and distribution of uranium. mines and processes uranium-bearing ores used primarily for nuclear power generation. Uranium mining is the process of extraction of uranium ore from the ground. Uranium ore is mostly found in relatively small concentrations, making most uranium mining volume-intensive, leading to open-pit mining. Uranium mining is undertaken in only a small number of countries of the world, partly because mining costs to uranium concentrations is high making sustainability at current prices rare. Kazakhstan, Canada, and Australia are the top three uranium producing mines and together account for 64% of world uranium production. About 27% of uranium is mined in Kazakhstan. Uranium ores are normally processed by grinding the materials to a particle size then treating the ore to extract the uranium by chemical leaching. The milling process commonly yields dry powder-form material consisting of natural uranium, yellowcake, which is sold on the uranium market as U3O8.

The worldwide production of uranium in a recent year amounted to 50,572 tonnes. Other important uranium producing countries in excess of 1000 tonnes per year are Uzbekistan, Namibia, Niger, Russia, and the United States. Uranium from mining is used primarily as fuel for nuclear power plants. As of 2008, known uranium ore resources that can be mined at about current costs are estimated to be sufficient to produce fuel for about a century, based on current consumption rates. Conventional mines have a mill where the ore is crushed, ground and then leached with sulfuric acid to dissolve the uranium oxides. At the mill of a conventional mine, or the treatment plant of an ISL operation, the uranium then separated by ion exchange before being dried and packed, usually as U3O8 Some mills and ISL operations use carbonate leaching instead of sulfuric acid, depending on the ore-body. Where uranium is recovered as a by-product, for example- copper or phosphate, the treatment process is likely to be more complex.

Current Trends in Uranium Mining听

Te uranium industry is expected to produce 8,530 tonnes of uranium oxide in the period of 2013-14, all of which is destined for export, as there is no local market for industry output. 鈥淎s such, domestic demand for the industry's output is essentially non-existent,鈥� says Ivanov. Depending on the timing of sales, exports do not necessarily match production in any single year. In 2013-14, the industry consists of four operating establishments and four enterprises, up from three due to the start-up of the Honeymoon uranium mine in late 2011. Spot prices fluctuated between US$40 and US$45 in the first half of 2013. China and India, together with other countries such as South Korea, are expected to continue their nuclear energy programs, boosting both the demand for nuclear energy and the price of uranium. Higher uranium output and prices are expected to underpin industry growth.

The Uranium Mining industry is highly concentrated, as about 64% of the global production of uranium from mines is from Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia. An increasing proportion of uranium, now 45%, is produced by in situ leaching. After a decade of falling mine production to 1993, output of uranium has generally risen since then and now meets 86% of demand for power generation. Kazakhstan produces the largest share of uranium from mines 36.5% of world supply from mines in 2012 alone, followed by Canada which records at 15% and Australia 12%.

In the aftermaths of nuclear catastrophe at the Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan which following an offshore earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 undermined confidence in nuclear energy. The world's worst nuclear crisis since the meltdown of the Chernobyl reactor in 1986 prompted officials in China and India to call for reviews of their atomic energy programs. The spot price of uranium oxide, which had already retreated from highs of over US$70 per pound reached in January 2011, fell steeply in chaotic trading. Although there was a subsequent rebound, spot uranium prices continued to drift lower to about US$52 per pound by the end of October 2011.听
