Discount stores industry comprises companies that operate by retailing a broad range of products for consumers and have a functioning discipline similar to department store. Except for few differences from department stores that is in lower pricing of products, discount stores are very much similar in size, layout and type of products sold. This industry comprises retailers that sell various consumer goods at discounted prices. Unlike department stores that have separate cash registers in each department, discount department stores generally have central customer checkout locations. The products in discount stores arranged will be in separate areas within the store and like a typical department store they too have a central check-out and billing located at the end of the store for consumers to complete the purchase and transaction. The discount stores industry retails in general merchandise such as apparel, dry goods, hardware, groceries, home furnishings, automotive parts and many others and every product is retailed at a very good discounted price. The discount stores industry has capitalized on the recession, with more consumers turning to these stores for deep discounts. In the next five years, these stores are expected to perform well by targeting low-income households and price-conscious customers. Nevertheless, competition from big-box retailers and higher disposable incomes will slightly hinder revenue growth.

Obstacles to growth in the global dollar and variety store market include rivalry from big-box retailers. As levels of disposable income rises, the industry may see revenue growth decline moderately. Dollar and variety stores carry a range of general merchandise, and products are normally sold at discounted prices, attracting consumers away from higher-priced alternatives offered by department stores. The overall profitability of independent discount store companies is reliant upon their ability to maintain competitive pricing, sufficiently locate stores, increase their revenue per square foot, manage the supply chain, and advertise product effectively. Small companies focus on creating niche markets for certain products, or discovering an untapped market. Large companies and edge in the industry as they are more easily able to negotiate lease agreements for store space, and bargain for lower costs with suppliers.
