Sapphire has much higher scratch resistance and fracture toughness for cover screens in personal mobile electronics. sapphire has better electrical properties, leading to increased touch sensitivity and potentially enhanced battery life. Sapphire is a crystal with a melting point of 2,044°C. Sapphire also has five times higher Young’s modulus of elasticity than glass. This also means that the liquid crystal display (LCD) behind the sapphire screen suffers much less distortion, providing superior and longer performance.
Based on Application, future vehicle construction may place other scratch prone materials in areas susceptible to scratch damage. Sunroof is emerging as key styling feature. Elegant surfaces on car dashboards, windshields, collaborative surfaces, interactive mirrors are being applied. Specialized surface treatments have helped reduce glare, improve aesthetics, enhance scratch resistance, and even cut down on odor and stain causing bacteria. Chemically toughened glasses are made by immersing glass in a molten salt bath that causes potassium ions to replace some of the sodium ions on the glass surface. In premium optical glazing, an extremely even coating of the scratch-resistant layer is important. Therefore, new processes are being developed to apply hard materials directly from the gaseous phase to the polymer glass.
