MABS is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene, and it has ordinary ABS resin鈥檚 mechanical properties, but higher impact toughness and transparency than ABS.
Currently, global production of MABS resin is concentrated as there are only a few manufacturers engaged in the industry. The product belongs to the family of ABS resin, but owns much higher added-value than common ABS resin. The largest manufacturer is Toray, who owns 30% production market share in 2019. Toray is also expanding their MABS capacity and the new additional capacity will be released in 2021 at its Malaysia plant.
Korea, Japan, Malaysia and China Taiwan are the major production regions. The four regions supply more than 95% MABS globally.
MABS cannot compete with the impact resistance of impact grades of ABS nor the heat resistance of high heat grades of ABS, however MABS can outperform polystyrene, SAN and PMMA for impact resistance and has similar heat distortion temperatures. Thus, MABS resin is widely used in the appliance industry, 3C industry, toys industry and so on. Among various applications, demand from appliance industry is the largest one. In 2019, 90730 MT MABS resin went into the appliance industry.
