Flight testing is the branch of aeronautical engineering that develops the specialized equipment needed to test aircraft behavior and systems. The instrumentation system was developed using a proprietary sensor and data acquisition system. Data is sampled during aircraft flights or atmospheric tests of launch vehicles and reusable spacecraft. The data is verified and analyzed for accuracy, and then passed on to a specialist engineering team for further analysis to validate the vehicle's design.
The flight test phase accomplishes two main tasks: 1) uncover and resolve any design issues, and then 2) verify and document vehicle functionality for government certification or customer acceptance. The flight test phase can range from the testing of a single new system on an existing vehicle to the full development and certification of a new aircraft, launch vehicle or reusable spacecraft. Therefore, the duration of a particular flight test program can vary from a few weeks to many years.
