A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC, DSC, DYSC) is a low-cost solar cell belonging to the group of thin film solar cells. It is based on a semiconductor formed between a photo-sensitized anode and an electrolyte, a photo electrochemical system. The modern version of a dye solar cell, also known as the DSSC, was originally co-invented in 1988 by Brian O"Regan and Michael Gr盲tzel at UC Berkeley and this work was later developed by the aforementioned scientists at the 脡cole Polytechnique F茅d茅rale de Lausanne until the publication of the first high efficiency DSSC in 1991. Michael Gr盲tzel has been awarded the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize for this invention.
Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC), a third generation photovoltaic technology has emerged as a subtle alternative for the contemporary Silicon based technology in terms of production and costing. Under the first phase of the project, PI has developed low cost purely organic dye molecules as a light harvesting material in dye solar cell. These dyes are easy to synthesize in laboratory as well in bulk without using precious metals either as catalyst or in dye itself.
In terms of the productions, the DSSC has not been entered into the commercial production, most of the companies are focus on the research and little demonstration project.
In term of conversion rate, the conversion rate is about 12-14% in the laboratory, small batch production volume is about 6-8%, the conversion rate is too low, so almost all of the manufactures don"t have batch production.
