They are bonded together on their undersides using polyester, epoxy or polyurethane based adhesives. The thickness of the resin layer is adjusted so that (for a certain wavelength) half of the light incident through one "port" (ie the face of the cube) is reflected due to FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) and the other half is transmitted.
