Travel and tourism, transport, ICT, insurance & finance, electrical energy, copper ore, machinery, coffee, wood, natural rubber, automotive, electrical goods, electronics and textiles are major industries of Laos. In 2017, Agriculture industry contributed 20.9% to GDP of Laos. Manufacturing had a share of 33.2% while services industry had a share of 45.9% of GDP in 2017.
In 2018, Services industry exports was valued at USD 921 million for Laos. Electronics export accounted for USD 690 million, machinery for USD 65.7 million, vehicles for USD 22.6 million, chemicals for USD 512 million, metals for USD 523 million, minerals for USD 2.16 billion, stones for USD 70.4 million, textiles for USD 348 million and agriculture for USD 1.15 billion in 2018.
Laos officially Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, is bordered by Burma and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Lao PDR is ruled by a single party Communist government. It was a former French colony that gained independence in 1954. The population is approximately 7 million, with most living in rural areas. Lao is the official language, with French still utilised in some parts of the capital of Vientiane. Thai is common along the border areas and in the capital. The official currency of Lao PDR is the kip (LAK).
Laos is estimated to have population of 6.973 million in the year 2020 and expected to reach 7.383 million by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 1.83%.
Laos’s real gross domestic product (GDP) was LAK 1,29,534.175 billion in 2019 and due to COVID-19 outbreak it is estimated to grow by 0.723% to be around LAK 1,30,470.707 billion in 2020.
Laos’s unemployment rate was 0.626% of total labor force in 2019. Due to slowdown in global economic activity due to COVID-19 pandemic the unemployment is expected to increase by 17.63% and reach 0.76% in 2020.
Laos’s per capita GDP was estimated at USD 2,931.80 whereas purchasing power parity (PPP) based per capita GDP is estimated to be at USD 8,485.37 for the year 2019.
In 2019, Laos government’s revenue was estimated to be LAK 27,063.85 billion whereas the expenditure is estimated to be LAK 35,077.68 billion. This resulted in Laos government’s net lending / borrowing negative at LAK 8,013.83 billion in 2019 indicating that not enough financial resources were made available by the government to boost economic growth.
The current account balance for Laos was estimated to be negative at USD 4.789 billion for the year 2019 and is expected to further decrease at a CAGR of 0.45% and reach USD -4.898 billion by 2024. This negative current account balance indicates that Laos will remain a net borrower from the whole world till 2024.
In World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking Laos was ranked 154 out of 190 countries in 2019. Laos’s ease of doing business ranking has remained unchanged from 154th position in 2018.
