As per Food and Agriculture, Organisation of the United Nations in 2018 Global milk output was estimated to be 843 Ìýmillion tonnes, an increase of 2.2 Ìýpercent from 2017 driven by production expansions in India, Turkey, Ìýthe European Union, Pakistan, Ìýthe United ÌýStates of ÌýAmerica and Argentina, Ìýbut partially offset by declines in China and Ukraine, Ìýamong few other countries.
This increase has come about as a result of higher dairy herd numbers along with improvements to milk collection processes Ìý(India and Pakistan), Ìýefficiency improvements in integrated dairy production systems (Turkey), increased yield per cow (the European ÌýUnion and the ÌýUnited ÌýStates of ÌýAmerica) Ìýand enhanced utilization of idle capacity and higher demand from the processing sector and imports (Argentina). Milk output declines largely stemmed from industrial restructuring processes and downscaling of small-scale farms Ìý(China) Ìýand reduced producer margins and farm gate prices (Ukraine).Ìý
