Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology used for communication between two devices within a distance of less than 10cm. NFC technology is used between different devices to transmit small amounts of data through radio frequency identification transducers. NFC is a standards-based connectivity technology that provides a common way to connect a variety of contactless devices, enabling other new advancements and future IoT developments.
Similar to proximity card technology, NFC utilizes magnetic induction between two loop antennas. The two loop antennas are in a near magnetic field formed by each other, which is equivalent to forming an air-core transformer. It operates in the globally available, unlicensed radio frequency ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) frequency band. It is this mode of communication that allows a smartphone or NFC-enabled device to connect with other devices in the vicinity.
