Myanmar, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand. One third of Myanmar's total perimeter of听 around 1,200 miles forms an uninterrupted coastline along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Its population of over 60 million makes it the world's 24th most populous country and, at 261,227 square miles, it is the world's 40th largest country and the second largest in Southeast Asia. Its capital is Naypyidaw and the largest city is Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon). It is a country rich in jade and gems, oil, natural gas and other mineral resources. In 2011, its GDP stood at $53.14 billion and was estimated to be growing at an annual rate of 5.5%. And even though is has a good economic growth it's believed that Myanmar's true economic potential will be difficult to achieve due to the nation's lack of development, as of 2013, according to the Human Development Index (HDI) and it still has one of the lowest human development in the world. Recently when the Cyclone Nargis disaster happened in May 2008 which the regime to used to perform a referendum to barter of the humanitarian aid in return of support for government鈥檚 constitution.
