Iceland is a Nordic island country marking the juncture between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The country has a population of roughly 320,000 and a total area of 40,000 square miles, which makes it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjav铆k, with the surrounding areas in the southwestern region of the country being home to two-thirds of the country's population. Reykjav铆k is the most northern capital in the world. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. According to OECD, in Iceland, the average student scored 501 in reading literacy, maths and science in the OECD鈥檚 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This score is higher than the OECD average of 497. On average in Iceland, girls outperformed boys by 13 points, a wider gender gap than the OECD average of 9 points.听
